After you install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, you can configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service. The Search service can be configured on a single server or on a dedicated search server in a server farm.

You can configure the Search service on a server farm environment for any of the following reasons:

  • You are hosting many sites.

  • You want the best possible performance.

  • You want the scalability of a multi-tier topology.

Before you configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service, you should read Plan search (Office SharePoint Server) and fill out the companion Plan to crawl content worksheet.

Configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service

Use this procedure to configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service.

Configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Operations.

  2. On the Operations page, in the Topology and Services section, click Services on server.

  3. On the Services on Server page, click Office SharePoint Server Search in the list of services.

  4. If you want to use the server for indexing content, on the Configure Office SharePoint Server Search Service Settings page, in the Query and Indexing section, select the Use this server for indexing content check box.

  5. If you want to use the server for serving search queries, select Use this server for serving search queries check box.

  6. In the Contact E-mail Address section, in the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address that external site administrators can contact in case assistance is required.

  7. In the Farm Search Service Account section, specify the account that you want the Office SharePoint Server Search service to use.

  8. In the Index Server Default File Location section, in the Default index file location box, type the path for the search index (for example, C:\Searchindexes) or accept the default file location.

  9. In the Indexer Performance section, select whether you want to perform indexing at the maximum or reduced rate.

  10. In the Web Front End And Crawling section, select one of the following:

    • Use all Web front end computers for crawling. Select this option if you do not want to define a dedicated front-end Web server for crawling.

    • Use a dedicated Web front end computer for crawling. If you select this option, select a front-end server from the list. Specifying a dedicated front-end Web server for crawling reduces use of the other front-end Web servers in the farm that would otherwise be subject to crawling.

For information about how to perform this procedure by using the Stsadm command-line tool, see Osearch: Stsadm operation (Office SharePoint Server).
