This article provides information about how to back up and recover site objects such as list items and documents by using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 built-in tools and Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007. In most cases, we recommend that you use the Recycle Bins to back up and restore site objects. System Center Data Protection Manager and Office SharePoint Server 2007 backup and recovery tools are intended only for backing up and restoring farms, Web applications, and databases. When possible, ensure that the Recycle Bins are enabled for important site objects.

For more information about using the Recycle Bins, see Protect and restore content by using Recycle Bins and versioning (Office SharePoint Server 2007).

For information about general backup and recovery for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, see Back up and restore an entire farm (Office SharePoint Server 2007).

You can use Internet Explorer and SharePoint Products and Technologies functionality to back up and recover a list item or a document.

The simplest way to back up a single document or list item is to use the Save Target As functionality in Internet Explorer. You must have Read permission for the document library or list to perform this procedure.

Save a document or list item
  1. In the document library or list, right-click the document or list item, and then click Save Target As.

  2. In the Save As dialog box, choose a location, and then click Save.

Recover a document or list item
