How to Model Multiple Custom Management Packs

A custom management pack is a management pack that Capacity Planner does not have predefined usage parameters for. If want to use a custom a management pack, you must define its usage profile values. By default, only one custom management pack is supported by Capacity Planner. However, it is possible to model multiple custom management packs when each client profile, representing a group of agent-managed devices, uses a unique usage profile.

For example, assume you have two custom management packs used by three different groups of agent-managed devices. The first group uses one custom management pack. The second group uses another custom management pack. The third group uses both custom management packs. These groups are represented in the Capacity Planner Model Editor as three client profile icons. Each client profile icon appears as a group of computers with a green “person.” An example of the relationship between the groups and the management packs is shown in the following table.

You can use the following procedures to model this example in the Model Editor.

To model Client Group A

  1. In the General Actions pane, click Edit Usage Profiles.

  2. Clear the Server templates box.

  3. Select any usage profile in the Select Usage Profile list, and then click Copy.

  4. In the Profile Name box, type Management Pack A.

  5. Click the Custom MP tab and type values for the following items:

    • Number of state changes sent per agent per day
    • Number of performance data items sent per agent per day
    • Number of alerts sent per agent per day
    • Number of events sent per agent per day
  6. Click OK.

  7. In the Site Topology view, click Add a client profile.

  8. In the Name box, type Client Group A.

  9. In the Count box, type the number of agent-monitored devices that belong to the client profile.

  10. In the Select usage profile list, select Management Pack A.

  11. In the Component list, select Custom MP, and then select Agent Managed Computer.

  12. Under Service configuration, click Associated Management Server, and then select the corresponding management server name.

  13. In the Network list, select the network that the computers connect to.

  14. In the Bandwidth list, select the speed that clients communicate to the network with.

  15. Click OK.

To model Client Group B

  1. In the General Actions pane, click Edit Usage Profiles.

  2. Clear the Server templates box.

  3. Select any usage profile in the Select Usage Profile list, and then click Copy.

  4. In the Profile Name box, type Management Pack B.

  5. Click the Custom MP tab and type values for the following items:

    • Number of state changes sent per agent per day
    • Number of performance data items sent per agent per day
    • Number of alerts sent per agent per day
    • Number of events sent per agent per day
  6. Click OK.

  7. In the Site Topology view, click Add a client profile.

  8. In the Name box, type Client Group B.

  9. In the Count box, type the number of agent-monitored devices that belong to the client profile.

  10. In the Select usage profile list, select Management Pack B.

  11. In the Component list, select Custom MP, and then select Agent Managed Computer.

  12. Under Service configuration, click Associated Management Server and then select the corresponding management server name.

  13. In the Network list, select the network that the computers connect to.

  14. In the Bandwidth list, select the speed that clients communicate to the network with.

  15. Click OK.

To model Client Group C

  1. In the General Actions pane, click Edit Usage Profiles.

  2. Clear the Server templates box.

  3. Select any usage profile in the Select Usage Profiles list, and then click Copy.

  4. In the Profile Name box, type Consolidated.

  5. Click the Custom MP tab and type the usage profile values of management pack A and management pack B added together for each of the following items:

    • Number of alerts sent per agent per day
    • Number of performance data items sent per agent per day
    • Number of state changes sent per agent per day
    • Number of events sent per agent per day
  6. Click OK.

  7. In the Site Topology view, click Add a client profile.

  8. In the Name box, type Client Group C.

  9. In the Count box, type the number of agent-monitored devices that belong to the client profile.

  10. In the Select usage profile list, select Consolidated.

  11. In the Component list, select Custom MP, and then select Agent Managed Computer.

  12. Under Service configuration, click Associated Management Server, and then select the corresponding management server name.

  13. In the Network list, select the network that the computers connect to.

  14. In the Bandwidth list, select the speed that clients communicate to the network with.

  15. Click OK.
