What Does the Pre-Installation Check Do?
If you are installing Windows EBS into an existing domain, the Installation Wizard checks that your existing environment meets certain requirements and that your Active Directory infrastructure is functioning properly. If you need to update or configure changes in your existing environment, the Installation Wizard prompts you to do that.
Important
The Installation Wizard requires that you have previously completed the Windows EBS Preparation Wizard and Planning Wizard. These tools help you identify and correct issues in your network environment that may affect compatibility with Windows EBS. For more information, see the Windows EBS Planning and Preparation Guide on the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=116291).
Important
The Installation Wizard guides you whenever you need to install an update or take a corrective action. However, make sure that you understand the requested changes. Some changes are not reversible.
The prerequisites that the Installation Wizard checks in an existing domain are as follows:
- Data stored in Active Directory indicates that you completed the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard. For more information, see Check for Deployment Planning Data.
- DNS Secure Dynamic Updates is enabled (if Active Directory is present in the environment), or the servers that are running Windows EBS are manually registered in DNS. For more information, see Windows Essential Business Server Registration in DNS.
- The domain controllers are running Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server. For more information, see Domain Controllers Running Windows Server.
- All domain controllers that hold operations master (formerly called Flexible Single Master Operation or FSMO) roles are responding to requests. For more information, see Domain Controllers Responding to Requests.
- All domain controllers are registered in Active Directory on the primary domain controller. For more information, see Domain Controllers Are Registered Correctly in AD DS.
- The SYSVOL and NETLOGON shared folders on domain controllers are healthy. For more information, see SYSVOL and NETLOGON Shared Folders on Domain Controllers.
- All domain controllers can replicate Active Directory data to Windows EBS. For more information, see Replication of Active Directory Domain Services Data.
- The Active Directory schema level is Windows Server 2008. You perform this update during installation. For more information, see Active Directory Schema Level Set to Windows Server 2008.
- The domain functional level for the domain that you want your server to join is Windows 2000 Server native mode or higher. For more information, see Active Directory Functional Level.
- Exchange Server 5.5 or earlier versions are not in the environment. For more information, see Microsoft Exchange Server Prerequisites.
