Networking Recommendations

This topic contains additional suggestions for configuring your network topology to support the Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration .

NIC Teaming

The concept of NIC Teaming (or sometimes called NIC Bonding) employs two network interface cards (NICs) bonded together to appear to the operating system as if they are a single physical device with a single media access control (MAC) address.

Once a logical NIC is configured, the operating system is not aware of the underlying physical NICs. Packets exchanged with the logical or bonded NIC do so independently of the physical adapter used in their transmission.

The IEEE 802.3ad static link aggregation standard defines the mechanism for this capability, which is designed to eliminate a single point of failure for any one physical NIC and makes the overall network connection fault-tolerant.

Enabling Ports for LDAP

Verify that the perimeter network firewall that separates the Edge Transport server from the Exchange organization is configured to enable communications through the required ports. The Edge Transport server uses custom Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) ports, which are configured when you install the Edge Transport server role.

The following ports are needed for the directory synchronization:

  • LDAP Port 50389/TCP
  • Secure LDAP Port 50636/UDP
