ISA Server 2006 and Exchange Server 2007

This section discusses security options that you can employ for network traffic handled by Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server and front-end Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 servers.

In the Exchange scenario, ISA Server will control traffic entering and outbound communication from your Microsoft Hosted Messaging and Collaboration environment. All inbound Internet traffic bound to your Exchange servers, such as Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), RPC over HTTP communication from Microsoft Office Outlook clients, Outlook Mobile Access (OMA), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), and Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 rev1 (IMAP4) are processed by ISA Server. The following figure illustrates the path that inbound and outbound messages will take if you choose to deploy ISA Server as an advanced firewall server in your Hosted Messaging and Collaboration environment.
