How to Determine Where to Start Your Migration

Follow these steps if you are not sure how to answer the question in Figure 1 earlier in this document: "Before you installed Windows EBS, was DNS in your existing environment integrated with Active Directory?"

To investigate if your DNS zone is integrated with AD DS

  1. Log on as domain administrator to your existing DNS server that is running a Windows Server operating system (not your servers that are running Windows EBS).

    • If you are unsure which server is the DNS server, from a Command Prompt window on a computer that connects to your internal network, type ipconfig /all and in the command output look at the IP address for your DNS server.

    • If your existing server is not running Windows Server, your domain’s DNS zone is not integrated with AD DS.

  2. To open the DNS console, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS. (On Windows 2000 Server, click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.)

  3. In the left pane of the DNS console, expand Forward Lookup Zones, right-click the forward zone of your domain, and then click Properties.

  4. On the General tab of the Properties dialog box, look at the Type field. If the Type displayed is Active Directory-Integrated, the DNS in your existing environment is integrated with AD DS. If the Type displayed is anything else, your DNS is not integrated with AD DS.
