Why can't I change the server name or internal domain name later?

The domain name and computer name are used during the Windows SBS 2008 installation to configure Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and the server applications. You cannot change either of these names after you finish this part of the installation. The only way to change these names is to reinstall Windows SBS 2008.

Before you continue, consider the following:

  • Check for typing and spelling errors.

  • Verify that this is the correct name for the server and domain.

  • Analyze if the names are too long to remember or too difficult to type. (Some scenarios in the Windows SBS 2008 network require that you type the server name and internal domain information.)

  • Remember that you can change the network administrator account and company information after the installation.
