The storage settings for Exchange Server 2007 cannot be configured

Problem   The storage settings for Exchange Server 2007 cannot be configured.

Features affected   Server Backup does not work, and older and insecure MAPI clients will not be blocked.

Solution   Complete the following procedure to recover the storage settings for Exchange Server 2007.

Pre-requisite   Before you continue, ensure that Exchange Server 2007 is installed on the server. For more information about installing Exchange Server 2007, please contact Microsoft Product Support.

To recover storage settings for Exchange Server 2007

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, right-click Exchange Management Console, and then click Run as administrator.

  2. In the User Account Control window, click Continue.

  3. Double-click Server Configuration, and then click Mailbox.

  4. In the center pane, click the Database Management tab, expand First Storage Group, and then do the following:

    1. In the Actions pane, in the First Storage Group section, click Properties. Ensure that the Enable circular logging check box is selected, and then click OK.

    2. In the center pane, click the Database Management tab, and then expand First Storage Group.

    3. Double-click the Mailbox database. The Mailbox Database Properties window opens.

    4. Click the Limits tab. Set Keep deleted items for (days) and Keep deleted mailbox for (days) to 30, and then click OK.

  5. Disable MAPI clients as follows:

    This section contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 322756 “How to back up and restore the registry in Windows” at the Microsoft Web site.

    1. Click Start, and then in the search box, type regedit.

    2. In the User Account Control window, click Continue.

    3. In Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem, and then click ParametersSystem.

    4. Look for Disable MAPI Clients. If it does not exist, on the Edit menu, click New, and then click Add Value. Set the name of the new value to Disable MAPI Clients.

    5. In the Edit String properties window, set the Value Data to 0.0.0-5.3164.0, click OK, and then close Registry Editor.

    Note

    If a blocked MAPI client tries to connect to the mailbox database after you configure the Disable MAPI Clients registry value, the error message that is displayed is: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.

    Note

    A client computer that is running Office Outlook 2003 receives the following error message: Your Exchange Server administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance.
