Optional Configuration

The default settings for the rules, monitors, and thresholds contained in a Management Pack reflect the Management Pack author's definition of a healthy state for the application, service, or hardware device that you are monitoring. These settings provide a starting point for administrators, who can then make customizations by using overrides or by creating additional Management Pack elements such as rules and monitors.

The default settings in the Server Virtualization Management Pack are designed to monitor a typical virtualized environment in a large enterprise IT infrastructure. No changes to the configuration are required to operate the Management Pack effectively.

Create a New Management Pack for Customizations

If you want to customize a Management Pack by authoring such things as overrides or new monitoring objects, you should first create a new Management Pack in which to save your customizations.

By default, Operations Manager 2007 saves customizations for a Management Pack to the Default Management Pack. However, saving customizations to the default location creates a dependency between that Management Pack and the core Operations Manager application, since the core views, tasks, alerts, and monitors are also stored in the Default Management Pack. This means you cannot uninstall the Management Pack without uninstalling the Default Management Pack. For this reason, it is recommended that you save your customizations of the Server Virtualization Management Pack under a different name.
