Step 7: Validate Installation of the Head Node in the Context of the Failover Cluster

You can perform a basic test to confirm that the HPC Scheduler Service and the HPC SDM Store Service that are used by Windows HPC Server 2008 can fail over successfully to the other server in the failover cluster.

To test the failover of the services used by Windows HPC Server 2008

  1. In the Failover Cluster Management snap-in, if the failover cluster that you want to configure is not displayed, in the console tree, right-click Failover Cluster Management, click Manage a Cluster, and then select or specify the failover cluster that you want.

  2. If the console tree under the failover cluster is collapsed, expand it.

  3. Expand Services and Applications, and then click the clustered instance that you configured for your HPC cluster.

  4. In the Actions pane, click Move this service or application to another node. When prompted, confirm the move.

As the service or application is moved, the status is displayed in the center pane.

  5. Optionally, repeat step 4 to move the head node back to the server that it was originally on.

You can use HPC Cluster Manager to view the head node that you configured and confirm that it appears as expected.

To open HPC Cluster Manager and view a head node

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Microsoft HPC Pack, right-click HPC Cluster Manager, and then click Run as Administrator. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

  2. If the Select Head Node pop-up window appears, click Another computer, and then select the name that you defined previously for the head node.
