Manage Small Business Server Backup

Using the Manage Small Business Server Backup taskpad, you can define and implement a backup schedule and perform regular system and data backups on the computer running Windows Small Business Server 2003. In addition to the tasks described in the following table, you can check backup status, including success and failure reporting and links to backup log files. For more information, see Manage Backups in Windows Small Business Server.

Task Summary

The following table describes the tasks on the Manage Small Business Server Backup taskpad.

Task Description

Configure Backup

Starts the Windows Small Business Server Backup Configuration Wizard, enabling you to configure backup on the server. As part of configuring a full server backup to hard disk or tape, the wizard enables you to configure deleted item retention and select an on-site user to change tapes.

Back Up Now

Begins backing up the server immediately, regardless of the schedule. However, two backup sessions cannot run at the same time. Thus, if a scheduled backup is running, you cannot start a new backup. If a backup is scheduled to begin while the Back Up Now task is in process, the scheduled backup does not start.

Modify the Backup Schedule

Enables you to change the day(s) or time of the scheduled backups. When backing up to a hard disk, you can specify the number of backup files to keep.

Modify Storage for Deleted Files and E-mail

Enables you to modify the settings for retaining e-mail and files deleted by users. These settings enable users to easily recover accidentally deleted items without the use of restore procedures.

Select a New Tape Changer

Enables you to select an on-site user to change the backup tapes. This user receives a calendar reminder for each day the backup is scheduled. When you select a new tape changer, the previous tape changer receives a cancellation notice.

Configure My Documents Redirection

Enables you to redirect all users' My Documents folders from the client computers to a location on the server or the network. If the folders are redirected to the server, they are backed up by default.

Learn How to Restore the Server

Opens a Help file that provides step-by-step instructions for recovering your system.

Restore Individual Files

Opens a Help file that provides step-by-step instructions for recovering files.

Restore SharePoint Files

Opens a Help file that provides step-by-step instructions for recovering files on the internal Web site, which is based on Windows SharePoint Services.
