Managing backups

Backing up data on your server can help prevent data loss due to user error, data tampering, or a virus attack. Backing up data is especially critical for small businesses because a total system failure results not only in the loss of critical data, but also in the loss of essential services such as e-mail and Internet connectivity. Without a current backup, even companies that use a mirrored hard-disk configuration may achieve only limited recoverability.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 provides an integrated backup solution. The entire server is backed up by default, including your intranet, mailboxes, and user files.

Important

  • Keep removable media in a secure location because a malicious attacker can use this data to reconstruct the server at an alternate location.

To configure backup, complete the Configure Backup task on the To Do List. For more information, see Backing up Windows Small Business Server.
