Updating user accounts

To update accounts, you must be a member of the Domain Admins security group.

Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 provides the Change User Permissions Wizard to help you update user account group memberships and Windows SharePoint Services site group memberships.

Note

  • Applying a user template removes previous group memberships and Windows SharePoint Services site group memberships and replaces them with those specified by the user template. Applying a user template does not change custom permissions that were applied directly to user accounts.

This user account update applies in two scenarios:

  • If you upgrade from Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, or Small Business Server 2000, you can update user accounts created for these operating systems. For example, when you upgrade a Windows 2000 Server network to Windows Small Business Server 2003, accounts created for Windows 2000 Server would not automatically have access to all Windows Small Business Server resources. The wizard would update access permissions for the user accounts as specified in the selected user template. It would also create and assign an Exchange Server 2003 mailbox and home folder if they were not already assigned.
  • For user accounts created with Windows Small Business Server tools, such as the Add User Wizard, you can update the user template applied to a specified user account. For example, say you created a user account for Sue that was based on the User template. Now you want to delegate some management tasks to her, such as creating user accounts or resetting passwords. Since Sue's user account is based on a standard template, she has insufficient permissions to perform the delegated tasks. You can upgrade her permissions by running the Change User Permissions Wizard and applying the Power User template to her account.
