Direct Broadband Connection

You must specify values for information about the external network adapter that connects to your Internet service provider (ISP) if the wizard was not able to detect the values.

Important

  • In addition to the configuration settings specified by this wizard, you must follow your ISP's instructions for connecting your broadband device to the Internet.
Item Description

IP address

Displays the IP address assigned to the ISP network adapter. This IP address must be within the same address range as the default gateway to your Internet service provider (ISP).

The IP address cannot be modified from this page. If you need to modify the IP address, see Notes.

Subnet mask

Displays the address space of your network.

The subnet mask cannot be modified from this page. If you need to modify the IP address, see Notes.

Default gateway

If the value was not defaulted by the wizard, you must type the IP address used by your server to send requests to the Internet. This IP address is provided by your ISP.

The default gateway can only be modified if your ISP network adapter is configured to use a static IP address.

Preferred DNS server

If the value was not defaulted by the wizard, you must type the IP address of the DNS server at your ISP. The DNS Server service provided with Windows Small Business ServerĀ 2003 will be configured to forward the DNS queries it cannot resolve to the DNS server you specify.

If you do not specify DNS server information, name resolution requests must instead use root hints. It is recommended that you use DNS server information if it is available from your ISP. For more information, click Start, click Help and Support, and then search for "root hints."

Alternate DNS server

If your ISP provides a secondary DNS server to use for backup DNS name resolution across the Internet, type the IP address. This option can be left blank. The IP address of the alternate DNS server cannot be the same IP address as the preferred DNS server.

Note

  • To change the settings for the ISP network adapter, click Start, point to Control Panel, point to Network Connections, right-click the ISP network adapter, and then click Open.
