Services Configuration

When you enable the firewall on the computer running Windows Small Business Server 2003, standard services necessary for Internet connectivity (such as HTTP on TCP port 80) are allowed through the firewall. You can also choose additional services or create custom services to be allowed through the firewall. For example, if you have third-party applications that require an Internet connection, you must create a service to allow the application through the firewall.

Click to allow incoming and outgoing Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) traffic so Exchange can send and receive Internet e-mail.

Note

  • If you installed Exchange, this option will be selected by default.

Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

Click to allow remote clients to connect securely over the Internet to your local network and use resources as if the clients were locally connected.

Terminal Services

Click to allow users to connect to the server using Terminal Services.

FTP

Click to allow File Transfer Protocol (FTP) connections to your server.

Note

  • To use your server as an FTP server, you must first install and configure the FTP service. For more information, click Start, and then click Help and Support.

Note

  • A filter is created to prevent IP address spoofing, which is when network packets are made to appear as if they are coming from the internal IP address range.

You can perform the following actions to customize or remove the additional services.

Add

Click to add a new service that you want to allow through the firewall.

Edit

Click to modify the selected service.

Remove

Click to remove a selected service and prevent it from passing through the firewall.
