Note

This is Version 2 of this document. To download the latest updated version, visit the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=59832). The update might contain critical information that was not available when the Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 R2 server software (Windows SBS 2003 R2) was released.

Windows SBS 2003 R2 is an incremental software update to Windows SBS 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). If you have not installed Service Pack 1 for Windows SBS 2003, you must do so before you can install the R2 Technologies. For more information about how to obtain Service Pack 1 for Windows Small Business Server 2003, see the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=62638).

After completing Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1 Setup, and after installing the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Premium Technologies (if you are installing the Premium Edition of Windows SBS 2003 R2), you can use the R2 Technologies disc to install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies.

Note

You can install the R2 Technologies before you install the Premium Technologies, but it is recommended that you install the R2 Technologies after you have installed the Premium Technologies. For step-by-step instructions about how to install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Premium Technologies, insert Premium Technologies Disc 1. When the Autorun page appears, click How to install.

The R2 Technologies disc contains the following:

  • Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2. Exchange Server 2003 SP2 is a prerequisite for installing the Windows SBS R2 Technologies. Exchange 2003 SP2 includes several enhancements to the Exchange Server 2003 messaging environment, including an increase in the mailbox storage limit, new mobility features for devices running the Windows Mobile® 5.0 software, and improved anti-spam capabilities.

Note

This document does not cover how to increase the mailbox storage limit or how to configure the new mobility features in Exchange Server 2003 SP2. For more information about these topics, see the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=59137).

  • Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0 Service Pack 2. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 is a prerequisite for installing the Windows SBS R2 Technologies.
  • Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies. The Windows SBS R2 Technologies contain the following components:
    1. Microsoft Management Console 3.0
    2. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
    3. Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
    4. Windows Server Update Services 2.0
    5. Windows Server Update Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
    6. Windows Small Business Server Update Services
    7. File Server Resource Manager

This document provides instructions for installing each of these items.

Before You Begin

Before you begin, review the following points:

  • You cannot uninstall Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
  • You cannot uninstall Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2.
  • If you are installing Windows SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition, it is recommended that you install the Premium Technologies before you install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies. For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Premium Technologies, insert Premium Technologies Disc 1. When the Autorun page appears, click How to install.
  • Windows SBS 2003 R2 Update Services requires free disk space in addition to the space required to install Windows SBS 2003 with SP1. In addition to the free disk space requirements for Windows SBS 2003 with SP1, the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Update Services component requires:
    • At least 1 gigabyte (GB) of free disk space on the system drive for Windows Server™ Update Services (WSUS). You cannot change the location of this free space; it must be located on the system drive.
    • At least 8 GB of free disk space for the update files. This free space can be located on any partition, but it is recommended that you choose a location other than your system drive. If you choose the system drive, the total amount of free space required is 9 GB: 1 GB for WSUS, and 8 GB for the update files.
  • Windows SBS Update Services might take several hours to fully synchronize. Windows SBS Update Services is the new patch and update management service offered with Windows SBS 2003 R2. After you install and configure Update Services, your server that is running Windows SBS begins synchronizing with the servers for Microsoft Update and with client computers on your network. The synchronization process involves registering your client computers with Update Services, synchronizing the list of available updates on your server that is running Windows SBS 2003 R2 with the list on the Microsoft Update servers, and then synchronizing the list of required updates on your client computers with the list on your server that is running Windows SBS 2003 R2. Your client computers then begin downloading required updates and reporting their status to your server that is running Windows SBS 2003 R2 at regular intervals. This process might take several hours for the first synchronization. Later synchronizations are considerably faster because the list of available updates becomes much smaller.
  • Review the Windows SBS 2003 R2 release notes. To review the release notes, insert the R2 Technologies CD (Disc 6), and when the Autorun page appears click Release Notes. Alternatively, you can view the latest release notes for Windows SBS 2003 R2 at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66573).

Important

You must be logged on to the server with the local Administrator account. If you are not logged on to the server with the local Administrator account, you cannot install the R2 Technologies.

Upgrading to Windows SBS 2003 R2:

Review the following points if you are upgrading from Windows SBS 2003:

  • It is recommended that you perform a full backup of your installation of Windows SBS 2003 with SP1 before you add the Windows SBS 2003 R2 components.
  • Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies Setup resets Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) settings to the defaults. Windows SBS 2003 R2 installs WSUS 2.0 with SP1 and then customizes it for Windows SBS. If you have already installed and customized WSUS 2.0 on your server, when you upgrade to Windows SBS 2003 R2, Setup overwrites your existing WSUS settings to work with Windows SBS 2003 R2 Update Services. If you later decide to manage updates by again using the standalone version of WSUS, you will need to reconfigure your custom settings.
  • Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) version 1 (v1) must be uninstalled before you install Exchange Server 2003 SP2. Exchange Server 2003 SP2 automatically installs Exchange IMF version 2 (v2). If you have already installed Exchange IMF v1 on your server, you must uninstall it before you install Exchange Server SP2.

Step 1: Installing Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2

Exchange Server 2003 SP2 is a prerequisite for installing the Windows SBS R2 technologies. If you have Exchange Server 2003 installed on your computer, you must install SP2 for Exchange Server 2003 before you can install the Windows SBS R2 Technologies.

Note

You can install either Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 first; the order suggested here is arbitrary. However, both service packs must be installed before you install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies.

Note

To determine if Exchange 2003 SP2 is already installed on the server, view the properties for Exchange 2003. To do so, click Start, then click Server Management. In the Server Management console, double-click Advanced Management, double-click First Organization (Exchange), double-click Servers, right-click ServerName, where ServerName is the name of your server, and then click Properties from the popup menu. In the Properties dialog, click the General tab. The version information should display Version 6.5 (Build 7638.1: Service Pack 2).

To install Exchange Server 2003 SP2 (Approximately 30 minutes)

  1. From the Autorun page of the Windows SBS R2 Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2003 .

Important

If you are upgrading and you have already installed Exchange Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) Version 1 (v1), you must uninstall it before you install Exchange Server SP2. Exchange Server 2003 SP2 automatically installs Exchange IMF v2. If you have already installed Exchange IMF v1 on your server, Exchange Server SP2 will not install.

Note

To determine if Exchange IMF v1 is already installed on your server, look for an entry in Add or Remove Programs. To do so, click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs. When Add or Remove Programs appears, look for the entry Exchange Intelligent Message Filter. If you are not logged on with the account that was used to install Exchange IMF v1, you will not be able see an entry in Add or Remove Programs.

  1. Follow the Setup wizard, accepting the defaults.

  2. When the Completing the Microsoft Exchange Wizard page appears, click Finish to close the wizard.

Note

After completing the Microsoft Exchange Wizard, if you are prompted to do so, restart your computer.

Step 2: Installing Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2

Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 is a prerequisite for installing the Windows SBS R2 Technologies. If Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 is installed on your computer, you must install SP2 for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 before you can install the Windows SBS R2 Technologies.

Note

You can install either Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 first; the order suggested here is arbitrary. However, both service packs must be installed before you install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies.

Note

To determine if Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 has already been installed on the server, review the entries in Add or Remove Programs. To do so, click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs. When the Add or Remove Programs window appears, select Show updates if it is not already selected. If Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 has been installed, you will see the entry Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2): WSSSP2 under Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

To install Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 (Approximately 10 minutes.)

  1. From the Autorun page of the Windows SBS R2 Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Service Pack 2 for SharePoint Services 2.0.

  2. When the message appears asking if you want to install this update, click Yes.

  3. On the license agreement page, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement. Click Yes.

  4. Installation of Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 finishes with the message, "The update was applied successfully."

Step 3: Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Technologies

After you have installed Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2, you are ready to install the Windows SBS R2 Technologies.

To install the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Technologies (Approximately 25 minutes.)

  1. From the Autorun page of the Windows SBS R2 Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Windows Small Business Server R2. The Setup Wizard begins.

  2. Keep the following points in mind as you follow the Setup wizard:

    • Setup may require a reboot of the server when it finishes.
    • On the Windows SBS Update Services page, if you do not choose to install Windows SBS Update Services, you cannot manage updates for the Windows-based computers on your network through the Windows SBS Server Management console. You can, however, install a standalone version of WSUS to manage updates for your network.
  3. After Setup finishes, if you chose to install Update Services, you must enable synchronization. To enable Update Services synchronization, open the Server Management console by clicking Start, then Server Management. In the console pane of Server Management, under Standard Management, click Update Services. In the details page click Synchronize now.

  4. During R2 Technologies Setup, File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) is added to the list of optional Windows components but is not installed. In order to use FSRM, you must install it using Add or Remove Programs. To do so, click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs. When the Add or Remove Programs window appears, click Add/Remove Windows Components. On the Windows Components page, select Management and Monitoring Tools and then click Details. On the Management and Monitoring Tools page, select File Server Resource Manager and then click OK. On the Windows Components page, click Next. File Server Resource Manager installation will begin. Insert the R2 Technologies disc if prompted, and complete the installation. A new item will be inserted for File Server Resource Manager in the Administrative Tools Start menu item.
