Migration

This section provides information about installing Windows SBS 2003 R2 on a new computer and then migrating data and settings from the old server to the new server that is running Windows SBS 2003 R2.

You can complete a server migration either to a computer on which you are installing a retail version of Windows SBS 2003 R2 or to a computer that has Windows SBS 2003 R2 preinstalled by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Steps to Complete a Migration

To migrate to Windows SBS 2003 R2, complete the following steps:

  • Install Windows SBS 2003 R2 according the directions in the appropriate migration document (details follow).
  • Migrate data and settings from the old server to the new server.
  • Use the R2 Technologies disc to install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies. For detailed instructions about installing the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies, insert the R2 Technologies disc in a computer that is running Windows. When the Autorun page appears, click How to install.

Migrate from Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server

If you want to upgrade to Windows SBS 2003 R2 by replacing a computer that is running Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server with a new computer, you must complete a server migration.

Migrate from Small Business Server 4.5 or Windows NT Server 4.0

To upgrade to Windows SBS 2003 R2 from Microsoft Small Business Server 4.5 or from the Microsoft Windows NT® Server 4.0 operating system, you must perform a server migration.
