Upgrading client computers

Windows Small Business Server 2003 enables you to upgrade applications on client computers so that they can be managed in the Windows Small Business Server network. The following applications are upgraded:

  • Client Operating System Service Packs. You are required to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or Windows XP Service Pack 2 on client computers.
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1. You are required to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1.
  • Outlook 2003. Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 requires that you have Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Note

If you are not running Microsoft Office Word 2003 but instead are running an earlier version of Word, you cannot use Word as your e-mail editor after installing Outlook 2003.

  • Shared Fax Client. Shared Fax Client is a required upgrade for client computers because of compatibility requirements by the fax server.

Note

Modem sharing is not included in Windows Small Business Server 2003. After upgrading to Windows Small Business Server 2003, uninstall the modem-sharing client application on client computers. To uninstall this application, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs. Click Modem Sharing Client, and then click Remove.

Note

Firewall client is not included in Windows Small Business Server 2003. If you upgraded to Windows Small Business Server 2003 and are still running Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, do not uninstall Firewall Client. If your installation of Windows Small Business Server 2003 does not include ISA Server, uninstall the firewall client program on client computers. To uninstall this program, on the client computer, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs. Click Microsoft Firewall Client, and then click Remove.

Note

If applications other than those available by default were installed on client computers, they will not be upgraded. You must reinstall these applications on the computer running Windows Small Business Server and reinstall them on client computers after upgrading them.
