Tracking Rights Account Certificates

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

By accepting the End User License Agreement (EULA) when you installed RMS, you may have agreed to pay Microsoft a licensing fee that is based on the number of client access licenses (CAL) that are used by your RMS installation. To help you determine how many licenses have been issued, RMS tracks the total number of users that have received rights account certificates from your RMS installation. This number is an approximation of the total number of rights account certificates that have been issued. If you have not updated your databases to delete users who are no longer active, this number will not be correct. Also, if you have users who have been issued multiple licenses in multiple forests, the additional licenses will be counted in the report. However, in this circumstance, only a single license fee is owed.
