RMS Licensing Service

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

The licensing service, which issues use licenses, runs on the RMS root cluster, as well as on any licensing-only clusters. Use licenses allow users to consume rights-protected content.

The licensing service application file, License.asmx, is located in the Licensing virtual directory that is in IIS.

Note

You can deploy a separate licensing-only cluster to offload licensing requests that are from the root cluster. You can also deploy a separate licensing server or cluster for a department, for example, to enable the department to establish its own rights policies. For more information about these considerations, see "Identifying Core Components" in "RMS: Planning and Architecture " in this documentation collection.
