Moving an instance of Virtual Server to a new physical computer

Checklist: Moving an instance of Virtual Server to a new physical computer

Step Reference

Install Virtual Server 2005 on the new computer.

Installing Virtual Server

Copy the Virtual Server configuration files to the new computer.

Assuming the host operating system is installed on the C:\ drive, then copy the following directories to the new computer:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Machines
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Networks
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Networks
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Server Webapp

For more information about these directories, see Virtual Server folders and files.

Copy all virtual hard disks to the new computer. Ensure that the complete path to the virtual hard disks is unchanged between the old computer and new computer. Otherwise, the configuration files will have a path that points to a non-existent virtual hard disk.

Copying and moving virtual hard disks

Update all virtual networks to use the physical network adapter on the new physical computer.
