The Dial-Up Networking 1.3 Performance & Security Upgrade (DUN 1.3) provides additional features for Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking that improve the performance, reliability and security of Windows based communications. These new features enhance both dial-up connections over standard telephone lines and Virtual Private Network connections over IP networks such as the Internet. Microsoft highly recommends that you print and read all materials under the Related Information segment before beginning the download process. Downloading requires following specific instructions in the documents.

System Requirements

Windows® 95

Recommended:

  • Intel Pentium processor (or compatible)

  • 90 MHz 16MB RAM

  • Windows-compatible modem

How to Download

Note: If you are using version 3.x of Microsoft Internet Explorer and you choose "Run this program from its current location" instead of "Save this program to disk", you may get an Authenticode error message. You should click Yes to continue installing this update. To avoid this error in the future choose "Save this program to disk", or upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later.

  1. Preparing your system

    • During the installation process, you will be asked to restart your computer. For this reason, make sure you save your work and exit all applications (except Internet Explorer) before beginning.

    • If you installed Windows 95 from a CD, you will need to have the Windows 95 CD ready before you begin.

  2. Double click on msdun13.exe.

    During the installation

    • Setup will ask you to restart your computer twice. After each restart, the set program rebuilds your driver configuration twice: once for Dial-Up-Networking and once to enable Virtual Private Networking.

    • Setup may notify you of a version conflict and ask if you want to keep an original newer file. If this happens, click Yes. (Always save the newer file)

    Updating your server

    • For the full benefit of this upgrade for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol connections you--or your administrator--must update the Windows NT Server "tunnel server" (i.e. the server which is the server providing access to the target network) as described on the Performance Upgrade Web page .

      • Microsoft also recommends that you contact your network administrator or Internet service provider if you think they do not know about this upgrade

Note: The Dial-Up Networking 1.3 Upgrade relies on features in the most recent version of the Microsoft TCP/IP stack. For that reason, installing the upgrade replaces your current TCP/IP protocol stack (or add the stack if you do not already have it installed.) If you have applications that rely on a third party TCP/IP stack, you may want to discontinue this upgrade so you do not corrupt this configuration and/or temporarily disable a dependent application. If you choose to perform the upgrade, and certain applications stop working, you may have to reload and reconfigure these
