Rename an Application Pool (IIS 7)

You might decide to rename an application pool to better associate it with the applications it contains.

Prerequisites

To rename an application pool

You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.

User Interface

To use the UI

Open IIS Manager. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7).
In the Connections pane, expand the server node and click Application Pools.
On the Application Pools page, select the application pool you want to rename.
In the Actions pane, under Edit Application Pool, click Rename. Type the new name, and then click outside the box.

Command Line

To rename an application pool, use the following syntax:

**appcmd set config /section:applicationPools /[name='string'].name:**string

The first instance of the variable string is the name of the application pool that you want to change, and the second instance of string is the name that you want the application pool to have. For example, to change the name of an application pool from Advertising to Marketing, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:

appcmd set config /section:applicationPools /[name='Advertising'].name:Marketing

WMI

Use the following WMI classes, methods, or properties to perform this procedure:

ApplicationPool.Create method
ApplicationPool.Delete_ method

Note

To delete an instance of this object, use the object’s Delete_ system method that it inherits from WMI. For more information about Delete_, see SWbemObject.Delete_ on the MSDN site.

To perform this procedure by using WMI, you must first delete the application pool and then create a new application pool, because the ApplicationPool.Name property is a read-only property.
