You Cannot Install Message Queuing, or You Receive an 'Access is Denied' Error

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Describes a specific problem with installing Message Queuing. Includes step-by-step instructions for fixing the problem.

This problem typically occurs when installing Message Queuing clients. During the installation of a Message Queuing client, Message Queuing installation fails and an "Access is denied" error message is displayed.

Diagnosis

To install Message Queuing clients, you must be logged on with local administrative permissions for the computer on which you want to install software. To install Message Queuing servers on Windows Server® 2008 family domain controllers, you need to have domain administrative permissions. To install Message Queuing servers with Routing Support on nondomain controllers, you need to have enterprise administrative permissions.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, either logon with an account that has appropriate permissions to install Message Queuing or grant the appropriate permissions to the account that you are logged on as when installing Message Queuing.

To grant local administrator rights to the logged on account

  1. Click Start, point to Run, type compmgmt.msc, and press ENTER to display the Computer Management MMC console.

  2. Click to expand System Tools, click to expand Local Users and Groups, click Groups.

  3. Double-click the Administrators group in the right hand pane of the Computer Management MMC console.

  4. Click Add and enter the user name that will be logged on during the installation of Message Queuing and click OK.

Note

If you are granting rights to an account on a domain controller, you must add the specified user to the Domain Users group in Active Directory Domain Services because domain controllers do not maintain a local Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database. Domain group membership is managed with the Active Directory Users and Computer MMC console.

To grant domain administrator or enterprise administrator rights to the logged on account

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and click Active Directory Users and Computers to display the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC console.

  2. Click to expand the top leve domain container, and then click Users.

  3. Right-click the Domain Admins or the Enterprise Admins group (as appropriate) in the right hand pane of the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC console and select Properties.

  4. Click the Members tab of the <Domain Group> Properties dialog box.

  5. Click Add, enter the user name that will be logged on during the installation of Message Queuing and then click OK.

Verification

After logging on as an account with the appropriate permissions, use the Add Feature Wizard available in Server Manager to install Message Queuing.
