Determine the Device Setup Class for Your Device

Updated: August 31, 2007

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to determine the device setup class GUID for a device.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

  1. Install the device on a test computer.

  2. Open Device Manager.

  3. Find your device in the list. It is categorized based on the type of device it is.

  4. Right-click the entry for your device, and then click Properties.

  5. In the Device Properties dialog box, click the Details tab.

  6. In the Property list, click Device Class GUID.

  7. Under Value, make note of the value displayed. You can select the item in the list, and then press CTRL+C to copy them to the clipboard.

  • Ensure that you include the curly brace characters { } when you copy and paste the value into your policies. The braces are required.

  • For a list of commonly used device setup classes, see "System-Supplied Device Setup Classes" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82268. Additional device setup classes can be defined at any time by the developer of a device driver, so this list is not comprehensive.
