Adjust the modem speaker volume

Updated: February 7, 2008

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to adjust the speaker volume built into many modems. The speaker allows you to hear the audio signal on the phone line, providing an audible confirmation of the dialing process.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

  1. In Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Phone and Modem Options.

In Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, open Control Panel. In View by, click either Large icons or Small icons. Click Phone and Modem.

  2. In the Phone and Modem dialog box, on the Modems tab, click the modem that you want to configure, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Modem tab, move the Speaker volume slider to the left or right to adjust the volume.
