802.11 Wireless Connectivity provides the status of the wireless network adapter, as detected by the Windows operating system. 802.11 Wireless Connectivity can detect problems involving the wireless network adapter drivers, and problems involving independent hardware vendor (IHV) service.

WLAN AutoConfig failed to connect to a wireless network

A reason code is used to identify a known condition that is responsible for triggering a specific event. Each reason code has a corresponding Event log message. In some cases, multiple reason codes are linked to one event, and any one condition with an associated reason code can result in a reported event. The following lists provides the Reason Codes, Event log messages and # Def names corresponding to each condition that can trigger Event. "# def name" codes are provided because they can be useful, if you are working with Microsoft Customer Service and Support personnel. Following this list, there is prescriptive guidance for each Reason Code that is marked with an asterisk (*).

Correcting Reason Code: 163848 - The size of the SSID list exceeds the maximum size supported by the adapter.

Delete unwanted or unnecessary wireless connection profiles

To delete unwanted or unnecessary wireless connection profiles:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, select Classic View, and then double-click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. In Tasks, click Manage wireless networks.
  3. In Networks you can view and modify, for each wireless networks that you no longer connect to, right-click a network connection profile, and then click Remove network.

Note: You cannot delete profiles that are configured by Group Policy.

Correcting other IHV-based errors:

  • Reason Code: 217100 IHV service is not available
  • Reason Code: 217101 The response from the IHV service timed out.
  • Reason Code: 524295 The IHV security settings are not supported
  • Reason Code: 524296 The IHV profile OUI did not match with the adapter OUI.
  • Reason Code: 524297 The IHV OUI settings are missing
  • Reason Code: 524298 The IHV security settings are missing.
  • Reason Code: 524306 802.1X setting is missing for IHV security.

For these errors, document the relevent error message and the specific reason code, and then contact the independent hardware vendor (IHV) service provider for your wireless network adapter.

Verify

There are two methods to verify wireless connectivity:

  • Check wireless connectivity by using the netsh wlan command
  • Check wireless connectivity by using the status of a local area connection

To perform these procedures, you must be logged on by using a local computer Administrator account, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If you are not logged on by using an account that belongs to the Administrators group, you must be able to supply administrator credentials, in order to run the command prompt as administrator.

Check wireless connectivity by using the netsh wlan command

To check wireless connectivity by using the netsh wlan command.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, type netsh wlan show interface, and then press ENTER.
  3. If the computer has connectivity, the command returns results indicating that the computer is connected, and whether 802.1X security settings are applied.

Check wireless connectivity by using the status of a local area connection

To check wireless connectivity by using the status of a local area connection.

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center, and then in Tasks, click Manage network connections.
  3. Using the local area connection for which you want to check connectivity, do one of the following:
    • Double-click the local area connection icon.
    • Right-click local area connection, and then select Status.
  4. If the computer has connectivity, the Media State will indicate Enabled. For computers that are configure for automatic addressing, click Details. Under Property, DHCP Enabled should report YES, and Lease Obtained information should indicate the day, month, year, and time the DHCP address lease was obtained.
