Change in-routing or out-routing servers

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To change in-routing or out-routing servers

  1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. On the View menu, click Users, Groups, and Computers as containers, and then click Advanced Features.

  3. In the console tree, right-click msmq.

    Where?

    • Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/YourOrganizationalUnit (such as Computers or Domain Controllers)/*YourComputer/*msmq
  4. Click Properties.

  5. Click the Routing tab.

  6. To change an in-routing server used, under In-routing servers, click the arrow that opens the list. Select a new Message Queuing server or select none to remove a particular Message Queuing server used as an in-routing server.

  7. To change an out-routing server used, under Out-routing servers, click the arrow that opens the list. Select a new Message Queuing server or select none to remove the Message Queuing server used as an out-routing server.

Notes

  • To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  • This task is applicable only to independent clients and Message Queuing servers without routing enabled that are installed on a nondomain controller, but can be performed from any computer with suitable permissions.

  • You can install a Message Queuing server with routing enabled on a domain controller, but it may impair performance.

  • When a client is moved to another site, these routing settings are disabled until the client returns to its original site.

  • Message Queuing servers used as in-routing or out-routing servers must be in the same site as the client. The same computer can be used as both the in-routing server and the out-routing server for a client.

  • If used, it is recommended that you assign more than one in-routing or out-routing server per client. This provides load balancing and failure recovery.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
