The Ping Command Times Out

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Typically, you see this problem occur when you use the ping command to test network connectivity or to see if another computer is on the network.

Cause

The ping command times out because the computer you are trying to reach is blocking incoming Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo traffic.

Solution

To fix this problem, you need to configure Windows Firewall ICMP settings on the computer you are trying to reach so that incoming ICMP echo traffic is allowed.

To allow incoming echo request traffic

  1. Open Windows Firewall, and then click the Advanced tab.

  2. In ICMP, click Settings.

  3. In the ICMP Settings dialog box, select the Allow incoming echo request check box.
