Description: The Remote Storage Server service stores infrequently used files in a secondary storage media. This service allows the Remote Storage application to notify the user when an offline file has been accessed.
Remote Storage is a hierarchical storage management application that migrates data from upper-level storage to lower-level storage. Upper-level storage is commonly known as local storage: data that is frequently accessed is stored locally on high-performance disks. Lower-level storage is also known as remote storage: data that is infrequently accessed is stored on less expensive media until it is needed again. Hierarchical storage management reduces the costs of storing large quantities of data, while ensuring that the data is still accessible.
File data is cached locally so that it can be accessed quickly as needed. When the amount of available space on a managed volume dips below the necessary level, Remote Storage automatically removes the content from the cached files, providing the disk space you need. When data is removed from a file, the disk space used by the file is reduced to zero. Data from cached files is not removed until more disk space is needed. When you need to open a file from which data has been removed, the data is automatically recalled from remote storage.
Because removable tapes or disks in a library are less expensive per megabyte (MB) than hard disks, Remote Storage can be an economical way to provide both maximum data storage and optimal local disk performance.
