New ways to do familiar tasks

The following table lists common tasks for configuring virtual private networks (VPNs). The user interface for performing these tasks is different in this version of Windows from the way it was in Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT 4.0 with the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS).

Notes

  • There are no significant user interface differences between Windows 2000, Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family for this component.

  • On Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, and Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, you can create up to 1,000 Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) ports, and you can create up to 1,000 Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) ports. However, Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, can accept only one virtual private network (VPN) connection at a time. Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, can accept up to 1,000 concurrent VPN connections. If 1,000 VPN clients are connected, further connection attempts are denied until the number of connections falls below 1,000.

Install the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)

Set the maximum number of PPTP connections

Set PPTP packet filtering

The Advanced IP Addressing dialog box from the properties of the TCP/IP protocol (Protocols tab of Network in Control Panel)

PPTP packet filtering is set by default when you run the Routing and Remote Access Setup Wizard or set manually when you use Properties of the IP interface in General under IP Routing in Routing and Remote Access.
