Component Selection

You can specify the actions to be performed for each of the components. The default installation includes Server Tools, Exchange Server 2003, and Fax Service.

  • Server Tools. Provides the following administrative tools.
Component Description

Intranet

An intranet developed by using Windows SharePoint Services.

Monitoring

Includes tools and reports to monitor server health and user activity.

Networking

Includes Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard, Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes, and the Remote Access Wizard.

Administration

Includes the Server Management console and the Server Management for Power Users console and administrative wizards.

Client Deployment

Includes tools for deploying client applications. To specify which applications to install, under Action, click the option for the Client Deployment additional components. Click the plus sign (+) to view additional components.

The following applications are included with Windows Small Business Server 2003:

  • Internet Explorer 6
  • Outlook 2003
  • Exchange Server 2003. Provides a messaging solution for Internet and intranet e-mail. It integrates with Outlook 2003 to schedule meetings or share contacts. In addition, it provides users with remote Web access to e-mail, scheduling, and contacts.

  • Fax Service. Enables users to send faxes from their desktops. This service eliminates the need for each workstation to have its own modem and a business to have multiple fax phone lines.

Modifying Component Selections

To customize your installation, under Action for the component, click the drop-down list and then select an option.

Depending on whether you are completing a new installation, upgrading an installation, or modifying an installation, the items under Action will be different.

Action Explanation

Install

Installs the component.

None

Makes no changes to the specified component.

Reinstall

Reinstalls a component.

Remove

Removes a component.

Maintenance

If a component is currently installed, but you want to modify a subcomponent, select this option under Action.

Indicates that the specified component was installed when you ran Setup at an earlier time.

Upgrade

Indicates that you have an earlier version of the specified component that will be upgraded by default.

Update

Indicates that a service pack or required subcomponent will be installed in order to update your server.

Notes

  • For information about customizing your installation at a later time, click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  • To modify the installation path for a component, click the component name, and then click Change Path.

Disk Information

To view the requested and available disk space for each drive, click Disk Information.

If you have a partition or disk that is not listed under Drive, verify that the disk is formatted.

To verify that a disk is formatted

  1. Open Computer Management (Local).
  2. In the console tree, click Disk Management.
    If the partition or drive requires formatting, the disk information dynamically updates after the disk has been formatted.

  • To open Computer Management, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
