Decline Updates

Windows SBS 2003 R2 Update Services is configured to display only the updates that apply to at least one of the computers on your network. This makes overall management of updates much easier because you manage only the updates that apply to computers on your network. However, even if an update applies to computers on your network, there may be instances where you do not want to install it. In these instances, you may want to decline the update.

You can decline an update at any time prior to installation, even if it has already been approved; however, once an update has been installed for a computer group, you cannot decline it for that computer group.

Decline an update

Complete the following procedure to decline an update:

To decline an update

  1. Click Start, then click Server Management.

  2. In the console pane of the Server Management console, click Update Services.

  3. On the Updates Waiting for Review page, decline the update in one of two ways:

    • Click the update that you want to decline, and then click Decline.
    • Either right-click the update that you want to decline and then click View Details and Approve from the pop-up menu, or double-click the update. The Update Details dialog appears. Click Decline for all groups.
  4. You are prompted to confirm that you want to decline the update. Click Yes to decline the update.

  5. The Update Declined dialog appears with a summary of your actions. After reading the summary, click OK to close the Update Details dialog.

After you decline an update, it moves to Installation Status and remains there until it reaches its expiration date or until it is superseded by a newer version of the update.

Note

You can still approve an update after you have declined it, as long as it appears in Installation Status. When you approve an update that has been declined, it is only approved for detection by network computers. That is, when you approve a declined update, it must still be detected as a required update by network computers before it can be installed. Network computers are configured to run detection every hour.

Note

Update types that do not fall under one of the update levels that use automatic approval do not have to be declined in order to prevent them from being installed. If they are not approved or declined, they will not be installed, but they will continue to appear in Waiting for Review until they reach their expiration date or they are superseded.
