Uninstalling and Unprovisioning RMS

For a variety of reasons, you might want to remove RMS from a server. For a server in the root cluster, the first step is to unprovision RMS on the server. You can do this from the Global Administration page of the server that you want to unprovision by clicking Remove RMS from this Web site. You do not need to unprovision a server in a licensing-only cluster before you uninstall RMS.

When you unprovision the last server of the root cluster in an Active Directory forest, the service connection point object (SCP) is removed from Active Directory. If you do not unprovision this server before you uninstall RMS, you cannot provision a new root cluster in that forest until you manually remove the SCP object from Active Directory. Manually removing an SCP can be done through Active Directory Users and Computers or by using the ADSCPRegister utility from the RMS Administration Toolkit.

Next, uninstall RMS.

When you unprovision and uninstall RMS from the last server in a cluster, the directory services database is removed. The configuration and logging databases are not removed; however, if you upgrade or reinstall RMS on the server, the logging database will be overwritten by a new logging database.

When you unprovision and uninstall RMS from a server that exists in a cluster, the configuration, logging, and directory services databases for the cluster are not removed. However, the configuration database DRMS_ClusterServer table is updated to show that the server has been removed from the cluster.
