The in-place upgrade is one of several methods you can use to migrate from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. Two other frequently used methods are the Move Mailbox method and the Swing method.

This technical article shows you how to complete an in-place upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 in a single server, single site environment. You must follow the steps in this article in sequence and omit none. By the end of this article, you will understand how to deploy an Exchange 2000 server with users able to log on and send mail to other users on the same server.

This technical article does not cover configuring Internet mail flow, Microsoft Outlook Web Access, Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server, Instant Messaging, Chat, or hosting mail for multiple domains.
