Great news for TechNet subscribers! You can use these labs as training materials for training courses you may be giving on Windows 95. Labs 1 and 2 contain great exercises to allow the Windows 95 beginning user to get up to speed quickly. Lab 3 is a quick introduction to some of the more advanced features in Windows 95. Remember, you're free to use these to train users in your organization, but they can't be distributed for profit or modified in any way. See your Licensing agreement for more details.

As the successor to Microsoft MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 is the next major release of the operating system for the desktop and portable PC. There is something for everyone, whether it's a more intuitive way to work, new and advanced capabilities, or better support for managing a 1,000 PC installation site. Corporate customers and end users alike will find that Windows 95 significantly furthers the ease of use, power, and overall usefulness of the PC.

Lab 1 - Introduction to New Features. These exercises explore those features that help to reduce support and training costs by making tasks more intuitive, or, where possible, automatic.

Lab 2 - Improved Productivity. These exercises demonstrate new capabilities that help to make both new and experienced Windows users more productive by making it easier to send, receive, and access information.

Lab 3 - Increased Control of the Desktop. These exercises are focused toward the advanced user and introduce features that provide more control over installation and configuration of PCs and provide improved desktop security.

Before moving on to the self-paced exercises, you should read this Introduction section completely.

Conventions

The conventions used throughout these self-paced exercises are identified so that you may easily follow and complete the exercises.

The following conventions are used throughout the self-paced exercises:

Indicates exercises requiring a local network connection or installation of the Network Management Tools.

Marks exercises requiring a modem connection

Requirements

To successfully complete these exercises you will need:

  • Complete installation of Windows 95

  • Complete installation of Microsoft Office (version 4.2 or later)

  • Connection to another Windows 95 computer across a local network

  • Modem and modem connection (optional)

  • Copy of the demofiles and Instructor's files for the exercises

  • A printer connected to the instructor's machine

  • Copy of the self-paced exercises

Setup

Before attempting to complete the self-paced exercises you should follow the procedures outlined below. The procedures are designed to assist you in the following areas:

  • Installation of demofiles on the Instructor's Windows 95 machine

  • Installation of Network Management Tools

Installation of demofiles on the Instructor's Windows 95 machine

Some of the exercises require that you access information from another Windows 95 machine. For the purpose of these exercises this additional machine is referred to as the Instructor's machine. The proper installation of demofiles on the Instructor's Windows 95 machine and a network connection to the Instructor's machine is critical for the completion of these exercises. If either of these conditions is not met, it will result in an inability to successfully complete these exercises.

Each of the exercises requiring the use of the Instructor's machine is identified using yt2a, the network alert icon.

To properly install the demofiles on the Instructor's Windows 95 machine

From the Windows 95 desktop of the Instructor's machine,

  1. Copy the instructor files to the directory c:\public\demofile

  2. Open the Explorer and left click on the Hard Disk (C:) icon

  3. Select the Public folder and choose File/Properties from the menu

  4. Click the Sharing tab and select the following options from the Dialog box:

    Select the Shared As option, Select Full as the Access Type, Click OK

The public folder is now shared. This means that others may access the information stored within this folder.

  1. DOUBLE-CLICK the My Computer icon.

  2. DOUBLE-CLICK the Printers folder to open it.

  3. SELECT a printer to be shared by clicking it's icon.

    If you do not have any printers installed, DOUBLE-CLICK the Add Printer icon and the Add Printer Wizard will step you through the process of installing a printer. Or, turn to Lab 1, Exercise 8 in this booklet to learn how to install a printer.

  4. CHOOSE File/Sharing... from the Printers window menu bar.

  5. Open the Control Panel and Choose Network. Click the File and Print Sharing button and choose the "I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s) check box to enable printer sharing.

  6. Choose the Following options in the Printer Sharing Dialog: Click the Sharing tab, select Shared As, type the word Network as the Share Name, Click OK.

    A Shared indicator (arm and hand with palm up) should appear under the printer icon.

  7. CLOSE all open windows.

Note: The Instructor's machine must be available during the exercises. For this reason, the Instructor's machine should not be shut down while you or others are going through the self-paced exercises.

Special networking notice

Some of the exercises require that you access information from other Windows 95 machines. These exercises are identified by the network alert icon, yt3a. It is recommended that you work concurrently with other individuals who are networked locally with you. The ideal setup for the exercises is a small networked classroom with one computer identified as the Instructor's machine and several student machines.

Two of the exercises require installation of the Network Management Tools. The specific tools used are:

  • Systems Policy Editor

  • System Monitor.

These exercises are identified by the network alert icon, yt4a.

The following exercises require network access to the Instructor's machine or another Windows 95 machine:

  • Lab 1 - exercises 13 and 14

  • Lab 2 - exercises 2, 4, and 5

  • Lab 3 - exercise 1
