Rename a Custom HTTP Response Header (IIS 7)

Rename an HTTP header when you want to better associate it with the information it contains.

To rename an HTTP response header

You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing the configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.

User Interface

To use the UI

  1. Open IIS Manager and navigate to the level you want to manage. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7). For information about navigating to locations in the UI, see Navigation in IIS Manager (IIS 7).

  2. In Features View, double-click HTTP Response Headers.

  3. On the HTTP Response Headers page, select the header that you want to rename.

  4. In the Actions pane, click Edit.

  5. In the Edit Custom HTTP Response Header dialog box, Name box, type a new header name.

  6. Click OK.

Command Line

To rename a custom HTTP response header, use the following syntax:

**appcmd set config /section:httpProtocol /customHeaders.[name='string'].name:**string

The first instance of variable namestring is the existing response header name, and the second instance of variable namestring is the name to which you want to change the header. For example, if you accidentally mistyped the name of the P3P header as P2P, you can change the name of the header. Type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:

appcmd set config /section:httpProtocol /customHeaders.[name='P2P'].name:P3P
