Change Settings for a COM or LPT Port

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to configure device-specific settings for COM and Line Printer Terminal (LPT) ports.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To change the settings for a COM or LPT port

  1. Open Device Manager.

  2. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).

  3. Right-click the port you want, and then click Properties.

  4. On the Port Settings tab, make the changes you want. If you want to change the COM port number (for example, from COM1 to COM3), then click the Advanced button, and then select the COM port number you need from the list.

  5. When you are finished making changes, click OK to close the Properties dialog box.

Additional considerations

  • Most hardware devices that use ports set the port speed automatically. The defaults for modem port speed are specified in Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel, in the Hardware and Sound section.
