System Error 1058: Telnet Service Fails to Start

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

This problem typically occurs when the Telnet service has not been set to Automatic or Manual. If the service is set to Disabled, then an attempt to start it fails, and then logs System Error 1058.

Cause

The Telnet service is still set to Disabled.

Solution

To enable the Telnet service

  1. Start the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. To do so, click Start, then in the Start Search box, type services.msc.

  2. Right-click Telnet, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Startup type list, select one of the following:

    • Automatic to start Telnet Server when Windows starts

    • Manual to allow Telnet Server to be started and stopped when needed

  4. You can start the service by clicking Start.

  5. Click OK to close the Telnet Properties page.

  6. Close the Services snap-in.
