Send Background Commands to Telnet Server

You can use this procedure to send instructions to the Telnet server.

There are times when you need to send a special command to your Telnet server, but you cannot because the program you are using in the Telnet session cannot be interrupted. You can use this procedure to send instructions to the Telnet Server from command mode that might allow you to regain control of your session.

Telnet Commands

Command Description

ao

Aborts output

ayt

Sends an "Are you there?" message

esc

Sends the Telnet Client Escape character to change Telnet mode

ip

Interrupts the current process

synch

Performs the Telnet synchronization operation

Any user account can be used to complete this procedure.

To send a command to the Telnet server

  1. On the Telnet client, switch to command mode. See Switch Between Session Mode and Command Mode.

  2. At the Microsoft Telnet> command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER.

    send command

    Where command is one of ao, ayt, esc, ip, or synch.

  3. Telnet Client sends the command to the Telnet server. Any output generated by the command, such as the Telnet server replying "yes" to the ayt command is displayed.
