Edit an Application Setting (IIS 7)

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista

Edit an application setting whenever you want to change an application setting that your application uses at runtime.

noteNote
Editing a configuration setting changes the setting at the local level and for any child levels that inherit the setting.

For information about the levels at which you can perform this procedure, and the modules, handlers, and permissions that are required to perform this procedure, see Application Settings Feature Requirements (IIS 7).

Exceptions to feature requirements

  • None

You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.

  1. Open IIS Manager and navigate to the level you want to manage. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7). For information about navigating to locations in the UI, see Navigation in IIS Manager (IIS 7).

  2. In Features View, double-click Application Settings.

  3. On the Application Settings page, select the application setting that you want to change.

  4. In the Actions pane, click Edit.

  5. In the Edit Application Setting dialog box, type either a new name for the application setting in the Name text box or type a new value for the application setting in the Value text box, and then click OK.

To change the name of an application setting, use the following syntax:

appcmd set config /commit:Machine /section:appSettings /[key=' string '].key:' string '

The variable string is the name of the application setting you want to change.

To change the value of an application setting, use the following syntax:

appcmd set config /commit:Machine /section:appSettings /[key=' string '].value:' string '

The variable key string is the name of the application setting you want to change, and the variable value string is the value of the application setting. For example, to change the value of an application setting called Application Name to Application1, type the following at the command prompt, and then press Enter:

appcmd set config /commit:Machine /section:appSettings /"[key='Application Name'].value:Application1"

For more information about Appcmd.exe, see Appcmd.exe (IIS 7).

The procedure in this topic affects the following configuration elements:

  • <appSettings>

For more information about IIS 7 configuration, see IIS 7.0: IIS Settings Schema on MSDN.

Use the following WMI classes, methods, or properties to perform this procedure:
