As you plan how to physically connect your Macintosh and x86-based computers, the first thing to consider is network media. Each network media type has its own method of cabling and network topology, and each requires different network hardware.

You can choose among three types of media:

  • Ethernet (Fast, Gigabit)

  • Token ring

  • LocalTalk

Ethernet is the most common network media in x86-based networking.

In token ring, all computers are connected in a ring or star topology where a token passing scheme is used to send messages. FDDI, although not as common, is based on token ring and is designed to be used with fiber-optic cabling.

LocalTalk, an early media, was used in AppleTalk networking.
