Install Connection Point Services

Before you install Connection Point Services (CPS), you must prepare for the installation:

  • Determine and verify the computer names and IP addresses of all the computers on which you will be installing CPS. You might want to have a dedicated server so phone book requests do not interfere with the response time of your other services.

  • Be aware that the Phone Book Service (PBS) server will be using Internet Information Services (IIS) to run the FTP and WWW services. This is necessary for PBS to receive posts from Phone Book Administrator (PBA) and to download updated files to client computers.   • If you have multiple servers running PBS, consider how you want to replicate data. You can use PBA to publish a phone book to only one server. You will need to replicate the phone book data to the other servers.

  • Document all of your processes, as well as the choices and tradeoffs that you made. This information will be valuable for troubleshooting your system and for future reference.

After installing Connection Point Services, you must set directory access permissions and test your installation.

To test the installation, create a test phone book and post it to the server. However, to fully test server functionality, you must connect to the server with Connection Manager, using a service profile built by the Connection Manager Administration Kit wizard.

The FTP service already resides on your server. If you do not want FTP to run while PBA is not in use, stop the service and then enable it when you are ready to post.

Important

  • Do not uninstall FTP, because doing so will automatically uninstall PBS.

  • You must administer each phone book using only one installation of PBA. Administering the same phone book using multiple installations of PBA causes version conflicts that will prevent your users from obtaining the most recent version of the phone book.

  • You can publish multiple phone books to the same phone book server, even if you administer each phone book with a different installation of PBA.

  • You must not publish the same phone book to more than one phone book server. Publishing the same phone book to more than one phone book server causes version conflicts that will prevent your users from obtaining the most recent version of the phone book. However, you can replicate the phone book to multiple servers from the server to which you published the phone book. You can use the Distributed File System (DFS) console to automate replication, or you can replicate the phone book yourself by copying the folder to the other servers.
