Description: The Trivial FTP Daemon (TFTPD) service implements support for the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) defined by the following RFCs:
RFC 1350, “The TFTP Protocol (Revision 2)”
RFC 2347, “TFTP Option Extension”
RFC 2348, “TFTP Blocksize Option”
RFC 2349, “TFTP Timeout Interval and Transfer Size Options”
To find RFC standards, see the Request For Comments (RFC) link on the Web Resources page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=291). TFTP does not require a user name or password and is an integral part of the Remote Installation Services (RIS).
A RIS server uses the TFTPD service to download the initial files required for the remote installation process to begin. The most common file downloaded to the client by using the TFTPD service is Startrom.com, which is responsible for bootstrapping the client computer. If the user then presses F12 when prompted, the Client Installation Wizard is downloaded to begin the remote installation process.
If this service is stopped, the server fails to reply to the client request.
If this service is disabled by using the Services snap-in, this server fails to send the initial files to the client computer.
The correct way to disable this service is to uninstall RIS.
