Web Element Manager (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: ELEMENTMGR

Executable Name: Elementmgr.exe

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The Web Element Manager service is responsible for serving Web user interface elements for the Administration Web site at port 8098. These elements are used to determine the following information:

  • Tabs to display on the administration Web site

  • Remote Administration tasks available to a member of the local Administrators group on the Server Appliance

  • Table of Contents

  • Help topics

  • Remote Administration alerts that can be displayed

A member of the local Administrators group can remotely manage a server by connecting to the server at https://servername:8098. When a connection is received on this Web site, the default Active Server Pages (ASP) code queries the Web Element Manager service on the Microsoft® Windows® Powered Web server appliance for each type of information listed above. After all the information has been collected, the appropriate Web page is displayed to the administrator.

The Web Element Manager service loads up all the information at startup time; the client (in this case, the ASP code) requests the Web user interface elements through a COM interface. The service runs in the LocalSystem account and requests through the COM interface are accepted only from clients running under the Administrator or LocalSystem accounts. If the service is stopped or its startup type is Manual, this service will start when the next request for Web user interface elements is received.

If this service is stopped, the service is automatically restarted when the Web interface for remote administration is accessed.

If this service is disabled, the Remote Administration Tools Web user interface for server administration does not function properly.
