Prerequisites for the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

Install the Windows EBS Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard on a computer that meets the requirements in the following sections. The wizards must be installed and run on a single computer.

Supported operating systems

Your computer must be running one of these supported operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2003

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows XP

Note

Make sure that you have installed the latest service packs and updates for your Windows operating system.

Important

We strongly recommend that you install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard on a volume that is formatted with the NTFS file system. Installing the wizards on a volume formatted with the FAT32 file system is not recommended.

Software requirements

The .NET Framework 2.0 software is required to install and run the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard. You can download and install this software from the Microsoft Download Center (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=14265).

Note

Make sure that you have installed the latest service packs and updates for the .NET Framework.

Network requirements

The computer where you install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard should be connected to your existing network (or to a test network, if you are evaluating Windows EBS). Your existing network does not need to be in an Active Directory domain. However, if you are planning to join Windows EBS to an existing Active Directory domain, the computer must be joined to that domain to test your environment for compatibility with Windows EBS.

If you are planning to install Windows EBS into a new Active Directory forest (instead of joining an existing domain), you are still required to install and run the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard before you install Windows EBS. After you indicate your choice to create a new Active Directory forest, the Preparation Wizard performs only limited checks of your existing network. After you complete the Preparation Wizard, the Planning Wizard collects important information about the network and firewall settings to help you plan for the new Active Directory forest.

Install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

Use the following procedure to install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard from the installation media for Windows EBS. You must have administrative privileges on the computer to perform the installation.

Note

To download and install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard from the Microsoft Download Center, see the instructions at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122951).

To install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

  1. Insert Windows EBS Disc 1: Prerequisite Planning Tools into your computer.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click Install the Preparation and Planning Wizards. The Preparation and Planning Wizards Setup Wizard appears.

    Note

If your operating system blocks the installer package for the Preparation and Planning Wizards Setup Wizard (EBSWizards.msi), you must unblock the package. To unblock the package, in Windows Explorer, right-click EBSWizards.msi, and then click Properties. On the General tab, click Unblock, and then click OK. Then double-click EBSWizards.msi to begin the installation.

  3. Follow the pages of the wizard to install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard.

    Note

If the wizard finds that you need to install additional software to run the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard, the wizard stops. After you install the required software, run the wizard again to install the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard.

Run the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

To start a wizard, click the shortcut on the Start menu, or double-click the icon on your desktop. Each time that you start a wizard, the Before you begin page shows you which step of the deployment process you are beginning (even if you previously finished the wizard). Then proceed through the pages of the wizard. You must complete the Preparation Wizard before you can start the Planning Wizard.

If you installed the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard on a domain-joined computer, you must be a member of the Domain Admins group to complete the steps in a wizard that require a connection to Active Directory. If you are not logged on to the computer with appropriate credentials, the wizard prompts you for domain administrator credentials when they are needed.

The Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard help you collect data about your network, including the following:

  • The internal and external IP address settings of the primary firewall

  • The gateway IP address and subnet mask for each of your subnets

  • Policy rules that are configured for your firewall

  • Access rules for your virtual private network (VPN) (if applicable)

  • The names and IP address settings that you will use for the Windows EBS servers

Note

If you do not manage the network gateway that provides your firewall protection, you may not have immediate access to your firewall settings. It may be necessary for you to contact the vendor who manages this gateway to obtain the necessary IP address settings, rules, and other information that is required to finish your deployment planning.

Before it finishes, each wizard allows you to open a report of the information that it collects. It is recommended that you print or save the report for later reference.

If you need to cancel a wizard before it finishes, you can complete it at a later date. You can also run a wizard again after you complete it if you need to repeat the preparation or planning steps. You do not have to enter information that you previously typed or selected. Each wizard saves your information to a local working directory and loads it when you start the wizard again.

Important

The Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard do not change anything in your network environment.

Uninstall the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

You can uninstall the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard after you complete the deployment of Windows EBS. You must have administrative privileges on the computer to uninstall the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard.

To uninstall the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard

  1. In Control Panel, open Programs and Features.

  2. Right-click Preparation and Planning Wizards, and then click Uninstall. In the confirmation dialog box that appears, click Yes.

After you uninstall the Preparation Wizard and the Planning Wizard, you can safely delete these files.
