Overview of UDDI Services Categorization Scheme Editor

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) is an industry specification for publishing and locating information about Web services. It defines an information framework that you can use to describe and classify your organization, its services, and the technical details about the interfaces of the Web services that you expose. This information framework enables consistent discovery of services or interfaces of a particular type, classification, or function.

UDDI also defines a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that applications and services can use to directly interact with UDDI data. For example, you can develop services that automatically publish and update their UDDI data, react dynamically to service availability, or automatically discover interface details for other services that they interact with.

For more information about UDDI in BizTalk Server, see UDDI Services (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=129130). For more information about the UDDI initiative in general, see OASIS UDDI (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=12422).

UDDI Services provides UDDI-compliant capabilities for use within an enterprise or between business partners. It includes a Web interface with searching, publishing, and coordinating features that are compatible with Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 4.0 through 7.0 and Netscape Navigator 4.5 through 9.0. UDDI Services supports UDDI version 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 APIs, which makes it possible for enterprise developers to publish, discover, share, and reuse Web services directly through their development tools and business applications.

Categorization schemes are an important part of UDDI because they provide a consistent means of describing and discovering Web service information. For example, a geographical categorization scheme makes it possible for publishers to classify their physical location and facilitate queries based on geographical location.

UDDI Services Categorization Scheme Editor is a tool that provides an interface for creating and modifying UDDI Services–compliant categorization schemes. You can use UDDI Services Categorization Scheme Editor to modify existing categorization schemes. You can also create one or more new categorization schemes and save them to an XML document that you can import into a UDDI Services site. To get the most out of UDDI Services categorizations, provide schemes that are logically ordered and applicable to the types of information that are published and discovered in the site.
