Event ID 60 — Failover Cluster Printer Driver Upgrade Status

Updated: November 30, 2007

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

yellow

On server clusters or failover clusters running Windows Server 2003 or later, an updated or upgraded printer driver usually propagates automatically to all nodes. This propagation is necessary because all nodes must use the same version of the printer driver.

Event Details

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 60
Source: Microsoft-Windows-PrintSpooler
Version: 6.0
Symbolic Name: MSG_CANT_ADD_UPDATE_CLUSTER_DRIVER
Message: Failed to install or update driver %1 on cluster spooler resource %2. Win32 error: %3. The printer driver is different from the driver in use on other computers (nodes) in the cluster. This can occur because of a transient failure in replication between nodes, or if the nodes are running Windows 2000 (which does not automatically replicate drivers).

Resolve

Update the printer driver

To update the printer driver on one node of a failover cluster with the same version of the printer driver that is used on other computers in the cluster, use the following procedure:

  1. Open Event Viewer, and in the Windows Logs, System log, look for Print Spooler Event 60. In the event log message, make a note of the printer driver that Windows could not install or update.
  2. In Control Panel, open Printers, right-click a blank area of the window, click Server Properties, and then click the Drivers tab.
  3. In the Installed printer drivers list, click the driver that you want to update, and then click Reinstall.
  4. Click Yes. Windows reinstalls the driver files, including any installed drivers for client computers that use a different processor architecture or a different version of Windows. The system might prompt you for the path to the drivers.

Verify

To verify that you resolved the problem, check the driver versions for the affected printer by performing the following procedure on each node of the cluster:

  1. In Control Panel, open Printers, right-click a blank area of the window, click Server Properties, and then click the Drivers tab.
  2. Select the affected printer driver, and then click Properties.
  3. Select Driver File, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Version tab, and then verify that the version number is the same as that listed on every node of the cluster.
