System Event Notification (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: SENS

Executable Name: svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The System Event Notification service (SENS) tracks system events such as Windows logon network and power events, and notifies the COM+ Event System service subscribers of these events.

If this service is stopped or disabled, COM+ Event System service subscribers do not receive system event notifications. They also encounter the following problems:

  • Win32 APIs IsNetworkAlive() and IsDestinationReachable() APIs do not work. These APIs are mostly used by mobile applications on portable computers.

  • ISens* interfaces — specifically, SENS Logon/Logoff notifications — do not work.

  • SyncMgr (mobsync.exe) does not work properly, because it depends on connectivity information and also on Network Connect/Disconnect and Logon/Logoff notifications from SENS.

  • COM+ EventSystem tries to notify SENS of some events, but it does not succeed.

Available on: Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
